Stringing: Tight or Not? The Complete Guide
The string is the most underrated component in tennis. Yet it's your only real contact with the ball. Choosing the right string can transform your game.
The 3 main families
Polyester (poly)
- For whom: advanced players / competitors
- Lifespan: 15-25 hours
- Feel: firm, lots of control
- Recommended tension: 22-24 kg
Multifilament
- For whom: intermediate players, sensitive arms
- Lifespan: 10-15 hours
- Feel: supple, soft
- Recommended tension: 24-26 kg
Natural gut
- For whom: pros, demanding players
- Lifespan: varies with humidity
- Feel: the best (the absolute benchmark)
- Price: 4-5x more expensive
Hybrid: the best of both worlds
Many pros use a hybrid:
- Mains (verticals) in poly for control
- Crosses (horizontals) in gut or multifilament for feel
Federer plays a hybrid. So does Djokovic.
Tension: the simple rule
- Too tight: less power, more control, injury risk
- Too loose: more power, less control, balls sailing long
Our advice: start at 24 kg with a multifilament and adjust to your feel.
⚠️ Strings lose their properties quickly. Restring at least every 30-40 hours of play, even if they still look fine.
